Naturalist FAQs

Common questions about field identification, offline mode, and plant care.

How does offline scanning work when hiking without cell service?
ForestForay saves your photos and exact GPS coordinates locally on your phone while you're on the trail. Once you get back into cell range or connect to Wi-Fi, the app automatically processes the scans and organizes them into your field journal.
What kinds of species can it identify?
The app identifies wild plants, native and ornamental trees, wildflowers, mushrooms, lichens, insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Each match provides the common name, scientific binomial nomenclature, and regional notes.
Can ForestForay diagnose sick garden plants and trees?
Yes. Take a photo of affected foliage, powdery spots, leaf rust, or pest damage. ForestForay evaluates the symptoms to suggest likely plant diseases, fungal blights, or insect pests, along with practical tips to treat and protect your plants.
Are my secret foraging spots and GPS coordinates kept private?
Yes. Your trail sightings and GPS coordinates are stored privately in your personal account. We do not sell your location data to data brokers or publicly expose your foraging coordinates.
